A mortising tool is a specialist axe designed for hewing sills and cutting notches in timber.
The long, narrow head enables the user to cut a deep notch, where otherwise a chisel would need to be used. It was used particularly for cutting the holes into posts for post-and-rail fencing.
This unit was purchased in about 1919 and used on the Ritchie family farm at Glen Park.
