A tea infuser is a device in which loose, dried tea leaves are placed for steeping or brewing. The tea infuser gained popularity in the 19th century and this example has been in situ in the kitchen at Hymettus for over eighty years and in use into the twenty-first century.

Significance

This item is an example of a commonly used kitchen utensil not in common use today. It has been superseded by the teabag.

Physical description

The tea infuser is made from silver plated metal with small holes. The tong style handle is used as a lever opener for the spoon shaped holders that contain the tea leaves at the other end.
