When Lilian Maud Pearson was 12 on 16 June 1933, her mother, Amelia (Millie), died; her sister Thelma had died a year earlier. Lilian worked at Sutherland Homes and later at the Diamond Creek pub to help support the family. She enjoyed the dances held by the Diamond Creek Fire Brigade and Panton Hill Cricket Club. Her best friend was Alice Grandy and her dance partners included Ken Stevenson, Jeff Brock (father of Peter Brock) who eventually opened Hurstbridge Garage service station, and Mick Rumney. Lilian married Mick who's real name was Charles Robert Rumney.
