Summary
Faces of Federation is partly a response to indifference. In confirming the Federation story to the last decade of the process, John Lahey has sought to convey some idea of the excitement, passion, changing fortunes and suspense which saturated the two great federation conventions of 1891 and 1897-98. In addition, he has searched archives around Australia to find photographs of nearly every one of the eighty-six delegates who took part. Lahey's view is that many of these men, now largely forgotten, were among the cleverest, most dedicated and most influential in Australia's history. Some other photographs from the era are published here for the first time in many years.
