Gas rattles were used in WW1 by Commonwealth and Allied armies after 1915 when enemy forces began to attack with chlorine, phosgene or mustard gas. When spun, the rattles produced a loud clacking sound that could be heard above surrounding noise, giving the men time to put on their masks or to take shelter.
