Historical information

This small match container probably once held Vesta matches. Vesta matches were patented in 1832. The tips were made of volatile phosphorus and needed to be kept dry, so small containers called vesta cases (or match safes) became popular Victorian accessories. Vestas could be lit by striking them against a range of surfaces so were quite dangerous, so enclosing them in a metal container also helped keep them safe.
