Men’s waistcoats were once an essential part of men's outfits. Usually they had front panels made of decorative or luxury fabrics like wool, tweed or silk, or crisp white cotton for formal occasions. Backs usually were made of cheaper material such as cotton. Pockets at the front carried a fob watch, small change or train tickets. This example was hand made by a Yarraville resident.
Physical description
Man’s embroidered cotton waistcoat with vertical stripes of alternate brown and grey stitching and four brown braid trimmed pockets. Front is edged with the same brown braid. Six pearl shell buttons, plain cotton lining and back.
