This animal horn container would have held snuff, and would once have had a lid, possibly made of silver, to stop the snuff from drying out. Snuff was ground tobacco, often scented with flavours such as cinnamon, vanilla, honey or chocolate, which a user would have 'snuffed' or inhaled. Snuff was usually taken directly from a small spoon or from the back of the hand.
