Historical information

Originally purchased for the Catholic Bishop's House or Palace at Ballarat it was purchased at the sale of the palace in 1996 to replace the original cabinet of similar proportions at Hymettus that was sold from there in the 1940s.

Significance

A large example of a parlour cabinet from the late nineteenth century. This mahogany cabinet is an example of ebonised chinoiserie decoration and while its label has been lost it was labelled as being French.
