A tragedy occurred at the McHaffie home in 1868. Capt. William Grossard was accidentally shot on 17 December 1868 when a friend of John McHaffie was on the verandah of the homestead and mishandled a gun. His grave is situated at Grossard Point, Ventnor, Phillip Island.
