Historical information

Friendly societies were member-owned organisations that provided services to their members such as health, sickness, and funeral benefits to members. They fell into abeyance once government and private companies began providing such services. Members and office bearers of societies in the late 18th and early 19th centuries were often honoured for their work in their societies with the presentation of ornate certificates.
