Sign - Sign - Nuclear Free Zone

Historical information

During the 1980s over 100 councils, including Williamstown, adopted these signs to designate their council areas as safe from nuclear material. The emblems arose from 1980s peace movements and the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty (Rarotonga Treaty).

Physical description

White metal sign, with black and red 'Nuclear free zone' inscription, and the nuclear free emblem in black and white.

Inscriptions & markings

"CITY OF WILLIAMSTOWN" in black paint, the nuclear free zone emblem and "THIS IS A NUCLEAR FREE ZONE" in black print.
