The Shire of Eltham was formed in 1871. As a result of the Kennett Government drive for Council amlagamation, the Shire of Eltham ceased to exist on 15 December 1994 and the new Shire of Nillumbik was established. In recognition of the contribution of the efforts of volunteer workers for the Shire of Eltham, a celebration function was held at the Eltham Community Centre on Thursday, 6 October 1994.
