Two blue cloth hardcover Arithmetic for Grade V1 books with the title printed in black lettering at the top of the front cover. In a circle below is an emblem in black with a crest and Education Department Victoria. The title page has the publishing details. There are exercises, charts, diagrams, illustrations and revision sections. Pp. 175 in one but the last two pages are missing from the other.

Inscriptions & markings

There is significant damage with blue ink pen and many pencil markings as well as scribbles at the back of one of the books and also throughout. One copy has at the back an AFL ladder written in blue biro, with many workings of sums. On the title page of one written in blue biro 'Warren Sebire. Wandin North' The other copy has 'Hank van der Helm' in blue biro on the front end paper. On the Contents page written in red biro is 'Nelleke van der Helm Grade 1671 Rose mary Cres 1968'. 1968 is crossed out in grey pencil with 1970 written below in grey pencil. This copy is not as damaged.

Summary

These Arithmetic books were compiled by experienced teachers to meet the requirements of the revised course of study in Arithmetic for elementary schools in Victoria, Australia. There are graded examples and the exercises involved use of the four operations with whole numbers. They are related to everyday life wherever possible. Revision exercises are provided as well as extension work for faster-moving students. It is a textbook not to be to be solely used but in conjunction with other teaching of Arithmetic.
