Clothing - Shawl, Caroline Richardson (nee Bewley), Early 19th century

This shawl was made in Ireland by Caroline Richardson (nee Bewley) before 1848, when the family moved to New York because of the prevailing Chartist views. They were Quakers and Richard Richardson (Caroline's husband) was editor of a paper. Their daughter Caroline was the mother of Dr. Robert Louis McAdam, who is buried in the Melbourne Cemetery. The McAdam Medical Practice was in Alma Rd, St. Kilda from 1889-1960.

Fine wool, netted in rows of brown, burnt orange, black and heavy cream in attractive designs.
