Textile - Russian Travel Icon in Leather Case, Alyona Petrova, 21 st C

Historical information

The Donor states-
" The small travel icon is a work of ecclesiastical embroidery tutor Alyona Petrova (2018 Crimea). She is a former Head of Embroidery workshop in the Trinity Iona Monastery.
Techniques used include 'diaper' goldwork and 'facework' in split stitch with hand dyed raw silk.
Travel icons are logical descendants of the huge travel iconostasis, which was taken by Russian nobility during wartime campaigns in the 16-017th centuries. It was impossible to bring heavy wooden icons, and they were changed to the embroidered ones. Nowadays small travel icons - both wooden, metal and textile - are popular to use in private cars for the 'safe trip'.
