Selina Murray McDonald Sutherland was born in 1839 in Scotland, went to New Zealand, and became active in nursing. After an injury, she took a round tour by steamer, one stop being Melbourne where Sutherland stayed. She was involved in working in, or founding, various charities, importantly the Sutherland Homes for Neglected Children which, later, was donated land at Greensborough by Miss Meglin on which cottages were built.
