Historical information

The garden and rotunda were in the grounds of the former Sunbury Asylum, which are the buildings in the background. The wall between the garden and the buildings is a Ha Ha which was built in 1895 - 96. They were built against a raised level to stop the wall on the upper side from impacting on the view in front. In other areas they were built to stop animals grazing on the lower common ground from reaching the houses. The Asylum gardens were in two sections and served two different purposes. There was the vegetable growing garden which provided the asylum with vegetables and the other garden areas were laid out with lawns, trees and shrubs and rotundas for leisure.
