Domestic object - Terracotta butter cooler, George Westmoreland, 1901

Manufactured by George Westmoreland. George Westmoreland established the Northcote Pottery in 1897. The porous teracotta dome would have been soaked in water - as the water evaporated the cooling effect would helped to have kept the butter fresh.

Physical description

Dome shaped terracotta butter cooler with ventilation holes, and a circular lifting knob. The dome sits on a circular terracotta base. Three lines of markings across dome surface.
