Historical information
Won by Dr Arthur Wilson in the "Hare and Hound" race 1909, run by the Medical Student Society (M.S.S) of the University of Melbourne. The prize was donated by Denyer Brothers - instrument makers of Melbourne. Possibly used by Dr Arthur Wilson to carry a syringe and ampoules of pethadine.
The Hare and Hound Race was an annual event for many years preceding World War I. A convivial meeting-up occasion, it was held early in the academic year and run along the beach and adjoining scrub in the Beaumaris to Brighton area. The occasion attracted hundreds and was followed by a celebratory dinner.
When the scalpel box was presented to the College, the inscription was covered by sticking-plaster. The plaster has since been removed.
