Artists statement
Nicholas Currie is an artist, curator and descendant of the Mununjali clan of Yugambeh people of Brisbane and Beaudesert. Currie works across painting, performance and installation and privileges the body in his practice. Currie's artworks are bold, abstract and often autobiographical, engaging with contemporary Australian Indigenous masculinity, mental health, sport, kindness and humour. Currieās large-scale nonfigurative paintings, like this work, are created through mark making and bodily performance and use chance, rehearsed actions, play and culturally significant movements. His works also use colour, mark-making and familiar objects that link with iconography associated with the Australian Indigenous experience.
Nicholas Currie presented this painting to Nillumbik Shire Council as a gift following his Visual Artist Residency with Council in 2023, based at Edendale Community Environment Farm. Nicholas writes on making this work:
"This piece was made on residency while at Edendale Farm. Say goodbye to the brush and hello to painting with fingers and hands. Like drawing in the sand. Movement in dance and movement in water."
Nicholas Currie has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from VCA, University of Melbourne. Has had solo exhibitions at Kings ARI, Futures and Blak Dot Gallery. Select group exhibitions Koorie Heritage Trust, VCA Artspace and Margaret Lawrence Gallery.
