Historical information

A monument to Scottish stonemason James Galloway was erected in Sturt Street, Ballarat. James Galloway was the founder of the Eight Hour Day, and the monument was erected by the working men of Ballarat. The principle of eight hours work, eight hours recreation and eight hours sleep won unanimous support amongst various building unions and soon became widely accepted throughout Australia.


James Galloway was born in Springfield, Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1828. He arrived in Melbourne in 1854. By 1856 Galloway had helped form a Committee of Masons with its chief goal being the introduction of an eight hour working day.


In 1860 Galloway died at the early age of thirty-two.
