Historical information
These slides are positive images imprinted on glass plates designed to be projected onto a screen using a magic lantern, a forerunner of the modern projector. Many of the slides are photographs of items in publications such as the London Illustrated News and other popular sources. Magic lantern shows were entertainments held in halls and mechanics institutes as a form of community entertainment. A slide projector would display the images onto a stage curtain accompanied by a commentary from the presenter.
The subjects shown were topical and patriotic, illustrating current events. The Australian colonies sent sizable contingents to South Africa, so the show would have been of great interest.
