Physical description

A red cloth covered Arithmetic book for Grade VI. The title, editor and publisher details are printed in black lettering and enclosed by a border of thin black lines around the edges of the front cover. 10d. is printed in the bottom front right hand corner. There is a small black lined symbol in the middle. The title page has full publishing details, with many student's arithmetical workings in black ink and grey pencil as well as the name of the student. Inside the front and back covers are many workings out of sums. Inside there is a list of the Federal Arithmetic books in the series, a Prefatory Note, Contents, explanations and samples of processes with 49 Exercises. There are included Tables, sample workings out, oral exercises. At the back is an advertisement for The Austral Grammars and The Southern Cross Public Schools Atlas. P. 152.

Inscriptions & markings

'Louis Kolling Wandin N. S.S 3892.' is written in black ink in copperplate lettering on the top right of the title page. 'Louis Kolling Wandin Nth State School' is written in grey pencil in the middle of the page. Many arithmetical workings out are written on the inside of the front and back covers in black ink. 'Ada Lord. Nth Wandin' is written in faded blue ink on the back of the front cover and on the top of the first couple of pages at the front.

Summary

This is a vintage cloth covered school textbook, specially written to meet the requirements of the new Victorian syllabus for elementary schools, focusing on comprehensive, practical mathematics for 11-12 year olds in the early 1900's. It covers fundamental topics like whole numbers, compound rules (money), fractions, decimals, percentage, length, and area. More complicated aspects such as Cubic Measure is not introduced until it can be applied to practical exercises in finding the the cubical contents of simple rectangular solids.
