The subject is wearing a dark blue robe with light blue front panels and yellow trim, with decorative buttons and embroidery visible at both cuffs. The subject is wearing a medal in the shape of a nine-pointed star from a blue ribbon around his neck. The subject has blue eyes and brown hair and is facing the artist, with his body facing picture left. The subject has a wristwatch on his left wrist. The subject is depicted sitting in front of a bookcase, with a shelf of books with white covers with red and blue stripes over his right shoulder. Signature painted at bottom right corner of portrait reads 'Frank Hodgkinson '89'. Brass plaque attached to back of board is engraved with the text 'PROFESSOR R.P. SHEARMAN/PRESIDENT/AUG 1979 - OCT 1981'.
