Historical information

Ernst Gottlob Wanke arrived in Melbourne as a ship's surgeon and deserted ship in favour of the Castlemaine goldfields in 1851. In 1853 he bought 640 acres at Harkaway. He established Hillcroft farm and grew wheat and barley and managed a dairy herd.
