Historical information

These items were relics from the Herbert's Stores, Orbost, demolished mid 1970s. Herbert's Stores operated from c.1886 to 1970 in Orbost and also in Cann River. In Orbost, the main store was located on the s.e. corner of Nicholson Street and Ruskin Street. A feature of the store was the Lamson Cash-Carry mechanism which transported money and receipts to and from a central cashier. This was a rapid-wire mechanism attached to the ceiling of the shops.

Significance

These items are significant because of their association with the Herbert's Stores in Orbost. Also, these itemns are a rare survivors of the Lamson cash-carry mechanisms which were installed in many larger shops in Australia during the first half of the 20th century.

A collection of items from the Herbert's Stores, Orbost. Items 3366.1 to 3366.15 are all parts of the Lamson Cash-Carry.
3366.16 is packaging tape.
