Domestic object - Wooden sugar pounder

Historical information

This wooden kitchen utensil was probably used as a sugar pounder, also called a sugar mallet, hammer, or cone crusher. From the 18th to the early 20th century, before sugar was refined into crystals, it was sold in solid, rock-hard shapes, called loaves. Pieces would be broken off and pounded into useable fragments. Could also have been used to pound herbs and spices.
