Historical information
The Orbost Railway Station was sited in a flood zone adjacent to the Snowy River at Newmerella. This posed problems with floods, particularly a flood such as the huge one of 1971 which was defined as a 1:100 year flood. It inflicted huge damage to the railway infrastructure adjacent to Orbost Railway Station. This photograph is one of many taken of the impacts of this huge flood. It is also interesting in that it has been taken from an aeroplane.
