Photograph - The Snowy River near Buchan

Historical information

This is a photograph of a painting by Eugene von Guerard (1811–1901). Von Guerard was an Austrian-born artist renowned for his detailed and dramatic landscapes, particularly of the Australian bush, painted in the German Romantic tradition emphasizing the sublime and divine presence in nature. He initially worked as a painter of landscapes and house portraits, often commissioned by wealthy landowners, and produced sketches and paintings during extensive travels across Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia, and New Zealand.
