Summary

Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was one of the great English novelists of the Victorian era, famous for vivid characters, social criticism, and stories that were first published in serial form. He began as a journalist, rose to enormous popularity during his lifetime, and wrote major works such as Oliver Twist, Great Expectations and David Copperfield.
Great Expectations is another of Dickens coming of age novels and is about Pip, a young orphan who is shaped by guilt, ambition, class anxiety, and his love for Estella. The story follows his rise from a humble village boy to a London gentleman, and then his gradual moral education as he learns what really matters in life. Dickens published it in 1860–61 in serialised form and then in a book published by Chapman & Hall in 1861. The novel is even today widely regarded as one of his major and most successful works.
