Historical information
Measurement of the circumference or diameter of a log was essential for determining the log's volume for the purposes of paying falling and carting contractors and for royalty calculations.
The rugged Lufkin diameter tape was in widespread use in the Forests Commission.
The tape was so calibrated as to enable a direct reading of a log's diameter when the tape was run around its circumference.
The direct measurement side of the tape is marked in feet and tenths of feet (rather than inches) while the diameter-calibrated side is marked in inches and tenths of inches.
