Tool - Mother of Pearl tape measure, 1840-1860's

Prior to the development of standardized tape measures, tapes such as these were marked by hand.

Significance

Represents the sewing tools of the era and the prevalence of them as souvenirs

Physical description

Tape measure in a rectangular mother of pearl box. Five sides are mother of pearl veneer. Base covered with paper. Brass handle on front to wind the pale blue tape which is hand marked in inches (1-18, 27,36). End of tape stitched over tiny wooden rod.
