Historical information

In 1880, the Board of Management of the Alfred Hospital voted to establish a training School for nurses based on the principals laid down by Florence Nightingale. The inaugural lecture was delivered on 1st December 1880 by the Chairman of the Medical Staff, Dr Johnn Blair. In 1881, three pupils and six nurses, including the matron, Mrs. Henrietta Strong qualified for certificates of nursing competency. As part of the School of Nursing Centenary celebrations, this oration was given on Monday 27th July 1981. The oration 'Nursing in the21st century' was delivered by Professor Baroness Jean McFarlane of Llandaff. Other members of the official party were Sir Henry Winnneke [Governor of Victoria], who unveiled a memorial plaque. In addition to the programme there is an article titled 'Alfred Hospitalt One Hundred Years of Nurse Training'
