WW2, Kokoda trail 1942
Raphael Oimbari (d. 1996) was a Papuan orderly and national hero of Papua New Guinea, famously known as a "Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel" during World War II. He was immortalized in an iconic photograph taken by war photographer George Silk on Christmas Day 1942, which depicts Oimbari leading a blinded, wounded Australian soldier, Private George "Dick" Whittington, to a casualty clearing station.
The image stands as one of the most enduring symbols of wartime mateship between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
