Clamps used to grasp fabric combined with a pincushion or emery (missing in this example) were very popular sewing tools in 19th century

Physical description

Brass and steel painted hemming bird clamp. Metal bird surmounting the clamp opens and closes its beak when the tail is depressed or released to hold material. Screw has decorative hea with three holes.
