Historical information

Pins are essential sewing tool, the second half of the 19th century saw mass production of them and many 'receptacles' to protect and keep them were made. Disc style pin cushions were very popular and this one has been made with mother of pearl which was very fashionable and with improved cutting and polishing equipment could be used on luxury items more affordably.

Significance

Era of improving technology for both making pins and preparation of thinner sheets of mother of pearl led to production of pin discs such as this.

Mother of pearl elongated octagonal pin cushion. Double sided with incised floral design. Padding covered with blue silk ribbon, ending in a bow, Stitching with matching navy blue thread
