Historical information

This is a photograph of the stage of the Emerald Mechanics Hall decorated for the occasion of welcoming back and celebrating the local men who had fought in World War I. 100 men from Emerald and the local district enlisted to fight. 34 did not return having died from battlefield wounds or disease.

Significance

This photograph speaks to the importance to the Emerald community of honouring its returned World War I soldiers.

Inscriptions & markings

The picture has a banner with the words: 'WELCOME HOME / TO OUR BOYS / DUTY / NOBLY DONE'
On the back of the print two handwritten inscriptions, the first in biro: 'After 1st World War'.
The second in pencil: 'R.S.L. Emerald'
