Historical information

The 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment was raised in Victoria in 1914 and sailed with the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force to Egypt. It landed on Gallipoli in May 1915 without its horses and served throughout the campaign. The regiment suffered crippling casualities, particularly in the charge at the Nek, 7 August 1915, when 174 were killed in a matter of minutes.
