Robert Sim was born in Manchester, England in 1925 and was privately educated in Liverpool. He sailed to Melbourne aged 28 and joined Wesby & Co timber merchants as manager where he remained until 1861 when he came to Ballarat. In the same year he established one of Ballarat's oldest businesses, Robert Sim Timber Merchant, at Bakery Hill. The business later moving to its present site at 102 Humffray Street South.
Robert Sim opened the Victoria Saw and Moulding Mills in Raglan Street through to Errard Street in 1889.[2]
After Robert Sim's death the business was continued by his son Charles R. Sim.
