The article, “School’s day of grandeur – New centre is opened” (written by Roth Jones), reports on the official opening of Maroondah High School’s new community centre on Wednesday, March 5, 1980. The event was led by Sir Zelman Cowen, the Governor-General of Australia, who visited both Croydon and Ringwood as part of the occasion. Sir Zelman Cowen arrived in a Rolls-Royce, greeted by enthusiastic cheers from approximately 1,200 children. He inspected the newly completed 225-seat hall, met staff and students, and spoke with local government representatives.
