Physical description
The Williamstown Workshops were the first dedicated railway workshops established by the Victorian Railways. The workshops opened at Point Gellibrand in 1858 and initially focused on assembling imported steam locomotives and later expanded to build and repair engines, carriages, wagons, and related equipment.
Between 1872 and 1879, the facility produced seven steam locomotives, the first being number 100. The workshops' operations ceased in 1889 when the Victorian Railways relocated them to a larger site in nearby Newport.
