Butter pats were common from about 1850-1920. These wooden pats were used to shape the butter on a butter board into pieces, instead of by hand as the butter was soft. The freshly churned butter was pressed to remove the watery buttermilk and to distribute added salt though the butter. They were also sometimes called Scotch Hands.

Physical description

A vintage handmade light coloured wooden butter pat made from one piece of wood with one smooth side and the other ridged. It has a shaped flat handle.
