Finely engraved exterior view of the Mechanics' Institute at 188 Collins Street, which was one of Melbourne's first public buildings.
Looking across street towards split level building, level at path with arched windows and balustrade at roofline, flight of steps leading to rear double storey wing with pilasters supporting a pediment at the roofline, pedestrians and horse and carriage in street.
