Historical information

In terms of the early history of Orbost, this photograph shows the functioning of the early method of transport which was along the Snowy River by boat. The small paddle steamer is the PS Curlip, built at Brodribb by Sam Richardson and his sons in 1890. It functioned on the Snowy River until 1915, assisting sailing boats in through the mouth of the river, and towing barges on the River.

This photo is significant because if shows the functioning of the PS Curlip on the Snowy River.

Physical description

Two photos 2747.1, 2747.2 of the same scene. One is a b/w postcard and the other is a copy of it onto paper. The b/w postcard shows a small paddle steamer with a steam funnel towing a small row boat and two barges. One barge has a load of bags in it, and three men standing on the barge. The bow of the second barge is the only part to be seen. This entire scene is on an expanse of water, a river with trees along its banks.
