Historical information

This syringe was used for the treatment of varicose veins.

This item was donated to RANZCOG's historical collection by Dr Ian Cope. In 1958, Dr Cope moved into rooms at 233 Macquarie Street, Sydney, which had previously been occupied by Dr Dame Constance D'arcy. He subsequently donated much of the material which remained in those rooms to the College.

Physical description

Glass 5cc syringe with blue glass plunger/piston. Barrel of syringe ends in a small glass tube extending diagonally from the bottom on the barrel. Tube extension has a metal fitting at the end with a narrow aperture. Barrel of syringe also bears a band of metal around upper section of barrel. Text on side of barrel carries the name of the manufacturer (B Braun) and the name of the variety of syringe ('Dr Jones'/ Varic Injection Syringe'). Barrel of syringe is marked with measurements up to 5cc.

Syringe has associated box lid, possible repurposed from a scalpel box. Label stuck to top of box lid has handwriting which reads 'V. Vp. Syringe./St James./5ccs.'
