This child's stacking tree toy was made by Mrs Wilkinson, a lecturer at the Kindergarten Teachers College in Melbourne in the late 1940s-early1950s. At that time, student teachers were taught how to make toys for the children they would teach. Karen Alexander's mother was a lecturer at the college and Mrs Wilkinson was her friend. The donor, Karen Alexander, has donated a range of objects from her childhood and from the family-owned farm at Emerald.

Significance

This stacking tree provides an insight into kindergarten teachers' education at that time. The toy is plain and heavy and painted in a block color (dark green) and would not be considered nowadays as very engaging for a child.

Physical description

Child's stacking tree toy. Heavy wooden. Consists of seven dark green removable rings that fit over a central pole which has a red base to suggest a plant pot.
