Historical information

This copy of Fifth Book (second edition) was published in 1940. It was provided by the Victorian Education Department to all grade 5 students in Victorian government schools and used as a teaching tool. The book contains a collection of short stories, poems, and snippets of longer known tales like "Robinson Crusoe and the man Friday" and "The Drovers Wife" by Henry Lawson. The book contains 63 short stories, poems and snippets for the students to read and learn from.

Significance

This item holds historical significance as it shows a method we used to teach our children in our schools forming the basis of public education for the community and contains multiple classic stories and poems still used today. The condition of the book also tells a lot into its use within our school system by local students.

Physical description

Rectangular hardcover book, measures 184mm x 145 mm x 20mm. It bears a rich dark green hard cover with the mark of the Education Department Victoria on its front cover. As can be seen from the name written on the first page of this book, this book was owned by a "H. Worrell." and on the next page another owner's name can be seen, "Moira Worrell." Stuck on the second page below the second name is also a small photograph of a kitten and puppy. Inside the book, some words or images can be seen coloured in.
