Historical information

These photographs are a record of the early life of Kallista woman, Beryl Collett (1925-2018) and forms part of a large and varied range of objects relating to Beryl which is held by the Museum. Beryl grew up in Ivanhoe but the family moved to the Dandenongs when she was an adult.Beryl was engaged to a young man from her church at Ivanhoe. (See presumed engagement photo.) Unfortunately, she developed tuberculosis and had to be sent away to hospital for treatment to which she responded well. However, her fiancé's family were concerned she would suffer ongoing ill health and persuaded him to break off the engagement. Beryl, in fact, lived into her early 90s with health and vigour.

Significance

The Dandenongs have been the chosen home of many creative people who, like Beryl, have found inspiration in the natural beauty of the area. Much of Beryl's work was created by her following her retirement from her accountancy job in 1980 and so epitomises the potential of the retirement phase of people's lives.
