This commemorative money box belonged to Karen Alexander who grew up in Belgrave in the 1940s and 1950s.

Significance

There was widespread excitement in Australia regarding the coronation of the young queen in 1953 and this commemorative money box reflects that.

Physical description

Children's circular tin money box commemorating the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Around the side of the money box is a picture of the royal carriage and separate portraits of the queen and Prince Phillip. Money box has some coins inside but there is no way of opening the money box without severely damaging it.

Inscriptions & markings

Inscription underneath the photos of the queen and the prince: 'Royal Visit'.
Also 'Made in Australia'.
